FAQ’S
Have some further questions about swim coaching sessions? Here’s some questions we are asked a lot, but if there is anything you would like to ask that’s not covered below, please do get in touch – [email protected] for a chat.
Can you tell me more about Pool Bridge Farm?
Pool Bridge Farm is a tranquil haven for swimmers with great facilities for you to use before and after your coaching session. It is located just outside of York, near Wheldrake, YO19 4SQ – you can get more information on their website here.
When you book a session with me the cost includes your lake entry fee and I’ll make sure you’re all booked in with a Swim pass.
If you want to enjoy the sauna or cafe facilities at the lake, you can book directly.
Carparking is FREE and close to the lake. There are basic toilets and showers on the farm, with a covered barn area for changing.
What do I need to bring to an open water swimming session?
Before your session I will send further details about what to bring with you so you have it to hand. You don’t need to go and buy lots of new kit, but here are some things that are always a good idea:
- Swim cap and swim goggles are not needed unless you want to fully submerge under the water- If you are wanting to keep your head above water I would suggest you swim with a woolly hat!
- Tow floats: are only needed if you plan to swim a long distance. For the session this weekend I expect that you will be ‘dipping’ with a very short swim so these are not essential but are a good idea for the future
- Wetsuits: These are not essential but may be a good idea if this is your first time in cold water. I have a small supply of wetsuits and neoprene socks to hire if you require one, but these need to be pre-booked and cost £5 for wetsuits and £2 for socks.
- Neoprene gloves and socks: I ran in group in January and everyone found the use of neoprene gloves and socks to be helpful. So these could be worthwhile investment if you think you may continue to swim outdoors.
- ESSENTIAL: Please bring and wear lots of layers!! The most important part of the session is getting dressed and layered up as soon as possible. So please bring lots of warm layers, socks, gloves, woolly hats, blanket, warm drink and some food (sugary snacks are good). Changing afterwards is in a barn so its not that warm, so bring a big towel or something that makes changing as easy as possible.
- I know for most of you this is the first time swimming in open water so please do not feel that you have to go out and buy lots of equipment, I can lend certain items, but maybe wait until you know you like it before spending lots of money.
Where will I find you at Pool Bridge Farm?
I will be outside of the Cafe to meet you before your session, you’ll see me with a flag to make our meeting point obvious.
Which swimming pool are the 1:1s at?
1:1 pool swim coaching sessions take place at Yearsley Swimming Pool, York. I’ll arrange everything and confirm the time, the cost includes pool entry fee.
I have never swam in a lake before, what will it be like?
Outdoor swimming is wonderful once you build up your confidence. Book onto one of the introduction sessions and I will help you learn about getting in and out of the water safely and share lots of tips so you can enjoy on your own in the future.
What will we be doing during an intro to outdoor swimming session?
I know that you might feel nervous prior to this session, but please be assured that you will be looked after and you only need to do what you feel like doing. The first part of the session will be a good opportunity to discuss kit and equipment, the effects of cold water, how to enter and exit the water, we will then get kitted up and put all the theory into practice. Depending of the time of year, the water can get very cold, so it will mean that your time in the water will be limited and will be very individual depending on experience and your reaction to cold water. As we will be talking through the theory at the start of the session please ensure you are dressed in warm clothing and have a warm drink to hand!
The session is safety covered by myself and another member of my team and we will not allow you to leave the session until we are happy you are feeling ok and safe to drive home.
Sessions will vary in length due to weather and water temperature. If the session needs to be postponed due to poor conditions, I will endeavour to give you as much notice as possible.
I can't swim, do you offer lessons?
The coaching i provide is aimed at those who can already swim, the beginners sessions are suitable for all, whilst th more advanced courses and 1:1’s will help with technique…
